Cuisine in Kaltern
Typical South Tyrolean cuisine has its origins in the traditional meals of the farmers and is therefore, quite simple, nutritious and filling. Take for example the famous “Speckknödel” speck dumplings, “Kasnocken” cheese dumplings, and Polenta that go so well with gulash and bratwurst or even fish or gorgonzola cheese.
Back in the day, lords and nobility, travellers and merchants all played a role in bringing various dishes, spices and new ways of preparing foods to South Tyrol – for example, delicious pastries from Austria or dumpling dishes from Bavaria – and have therefore left their mark on the cuisine in Kaltern.
We strongly suggest trying some local dishes of wild game or freshwater fish from the local waters. There are also sweet specialties such as homemade cakes and pastries. You also can’t miss the undeniable presence of the Mediterranean kitchen. Italian quality coffees and ice creams and homemade cakes and sweets from both north and south will tempt you at the numerous cafés and bars in Kaltern.
