DOC-Classification

Since 1963, the cultivation, production, and marketing of wines in South Tyrol has been placed under strict legal protection: under the DOC regulations (DOC stands for denominazione di origine controllata, or controlled designation of origin).  Today, 98.8 percent of all of the vineyard area in South Tyrol is under DOC protection.  In that respect, South Tyrol stands alone at the pinnacle of all of Italy.

The DOC designation on the one hand protects producers against the misuse of the designation of origin, and on the other hand, it protects consumers through the guarantee of the origin of the wine.
DOC wines of South Tyrol
Südtiroler
This designation by itself may only be used for South Tyrolean sparkling wine and for "Südtiroler Weiß" white wines...
Kalterersee
This DOC designation is not preceded by the word "Südtirol". That is because "Kalterersee" may also be produced in five communities across the district border in Trentino.
Südtirol Eisacktaler
In the Isarco (Eisack) Valley, it is almost exclusively white wines that are produced
Südtirol St. Magdalener
The "Magdalener" flourishes on the hills and slopes north of Bolzano.
Südtirol Terlaner
As with the Isarco Valley, the Terlan basin is also a typical white wine zone...
Südtirol Meraner
This wine grows in the vineyards around Merano....
Südtirol Vinschgau
This is the newest DOC zone in South Tyrol. This zone was first recognized as a DOC cultivation area...
