Since 1963, the cultivation, production, and marketing of wines in South Tyrol has been placed under strict legal protection: under the DOC regulations (DOC stands for denominazione di origine controllata, or controlled designation of origin). Today,
98.8 percent of all of the vineyard area in South Tyrol is under DOC protection. In that respect, South Tyrol stands alone at the pinnacle of all of Italy.
The DOC designation on the one hand
protects producers against the misuse of the designation of origin, and on the other hand, it
protects consumers through the guarantee of the origin of the wine.
