Traditional Methods: The Pergola
Originally the pergola structure was made entirely of wood, with the vertically erected posts supporting the horizontally fastened poles.
Around the 1900s, the wire pergola was introduced and the wooden parts were replaced with cement posts. With great inventiveness, the wine farmers began developing numerous variations of the standard pergola (for example the double or half-arched pergola) with the intention of finding the best system to fit into the slope of the land and the angle of the sun.
Using the pergola system, approximately 3,000 to 5,000 plants per hectare can be cultivated. The emerging trend is that only the Vernatsch grape will continue to be cultivated using the pergola system, since thhis variety can best unfurl its quality using this traditional system.
However, a few experts point out that due to sustained climatic temperatures and the trend in higher alcohol levels in wine, the pergola system could undergo a revival in the very near future.
