Wine Growing in Kaltern

The region referred to as the Überetsch, is for many, the epitome of South Tyrolean wine growing tradition. Located at the foot of the Mendel mountain range, it is nestled into the hillside of the western Etsch river valley between the city of Bolzano and the village of Tramin. The traditional wine growing villages of Eppan and Kaltern are also the two largest wine producers in all of South Tyrol. Undoubtedly, Lake Kalterersee gives the entire area its indisputable Mediterranean flair.

Just as each of the nine individual communities in Kaltern – St. Josef am See, Markt village center, Unterplanitzing, Mitterdorf, Pfuss, Oberplanitzing, St. Anton, St. Nikolaus, and Altenburg, is so diverse and unique, so too, is the individuality of each wine growing vineyard location in Kaltern.
Kaltern, with 760 hectares of vineyards, is the second largest wine growing village in South Tyrol. And due to the lake and excellent wine growing conditions, it is also the most famous wine growing village in all of South Tyrol.
